Petition status update - Containment for Crystal River
Dear Mr. Saporito:
This is a periodic status update regarding your petition dated December 5, 2009, as supplemented by portions of your petition dated August 6, 2010, regarding Florida Power Corporation (the licensee) at Crystal River Nuclear Generating Plant, Unit 3 (CR-3). This email fulfills the guidance in Management Directive 8.11, Review Process for 10 CFR 2.206 petitions, for period status updates.
As you know, Duke Energy, which acquired CR-3 in 2012, is retiring the plant. Duke publicly announced the decision on February 5, 2013, and submitted letters confirming cessation of power operations, and the permanent removal of fuel from the reactor vessel on February 20, 2013.
The NRC continues to review your petition, assessing the impact of the licensees decision on your requested actions. The schedule for the issuance of the proposed Directors Decision is December 3, 2013.
