NRC Virtual Public Meeting/Webinar for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Spent Fuel Activities Meeting Identifier: Webinar #242-300-459 Date of Meeting: March 25, 2019 Location: Webinar Type of Meeting: Category 3 Purpose of the Meeting: The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) hosted a public meeting and webinar to discuss its final enforcement decisions regarding the Special Inspection conducted by the NRC to evaluate an August 3, 2018, incident involving a loaded spent fuel storage canister that was misaligned and became stuck on a metal flange while being lowered into a storage vault. During the public meeting, NRC staff also discussed preliminary observations and findings from recent inspection activities at SONGS to independently verify the adequacy of follow-up corrective actions taken by the licensee, Southern California Edison Company.

* Two NRC staff members participated in the webinar; approximately six staff members supported the webinar.
* Over 270 individuals participated in the webinar for various amounts of time.
* The meeting started at 2:00 pm CDT and ended at approximately 3:30 pm CDT.
* Two staff members gave a formal presentation that lasted approximately one hour; after the presentation, the NRC answered questions for approximately 30 minutes.
* The public participants submitted approximately 150 questions before and during the webinar.
* An NRC facilitator was used to support the public meeting.
* The webinar was recorded and will be placed on the NRC website for public review when it is available.
Summary of Presentations: Two NRC staff members formally presented the details of the NRCs final enforcement decision regarding two apparent violations resulting from the Special Inspection that was conducted at the SONGS site from September 10-14, 2018. The formal presentation included a summary of the incident, NRC's review of the licensee's corrective actions, and additional observations and potential findings. After the formal presentation, the NRC staff answered questions from the public.
 
Public Participation Themes: Most questions and answers were technical in nature, but a few questions and answers involved licensee performance and NRCs enforcement process.
Several unanswered questions were personal opinions or commentaries and were outside the scope of the meeting.
