Discussion:
Many NRC licensees, particularly radiographers, well-loggers, and portable

gauge users, are authorized to use radioactive material at temporary job

sites. However, this authorization does not permit operations in the 29 Agreement States (except for licensees who are Federal Agencies). Some

Agreement States have reciprocity provisions that permit NRC licensees

to perform work using NRC-licensed radioactive materials in their'States.

In some Agreement States, you will need to obtain a license to perform

work using licensed materials. Most Agreement States permit reciprocity

for as long as 180 days per year and some permit reciprocity for as little

as 20 days per year. NRC licensees are advised that they should notify the

Agreement State in advance of doing work in that State.

We have attached telephone numbers for all the Agreement States and a map

showing the location of Agreement States.

UNITED STATES

NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION

OFFICE OF NUCLEAR MATERIAL SAFETY AND SAFEGUARDS

WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555 March 7, 1990

NRC INFORMATION NOTICE No. 90-15: RECIPROCITY: NOTIFICATION OF AGREEMENT

STATE RADIATION CONTROL DIRECTORS BEFORE

BEGINNING WORK IN AGREEMENT STATES

Addressees

All holders of Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) materials licenses which

authorize use of radioactive material at temporary Job sites.

Purpose

This information notice provides guidance to materials licensees about

notifying Agreement State Radiation Control Directors before working

with NRC-licensed material in an Agreement State. It is expected that

recipients will review this notice for applicability to their NRC licensed

programs to ensure compliance with Agreement State requirements. No

written response to this information notice is required.
