TURKEY POINT PLANT, UNITS 3 AND 4 - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONALINFORMATION REGARDING PROPOSED EXEMPTION FROM AUTOMATIC FIRE SUPPRESSION AND DETECTION REQUIREMENTS (TAC NOS. MC5542 AND MC5543)

Dear Mr. Stall:

By letter dated December 27, 2004, as supplemented May 23, 2005, Florida Power & LightCompany submitted a proposed exemption from certain requirements of Title 10 to the Code ofFederal Regulations, Part 50, Appendix R. Specifically, the request involves an exemption fromthe requirements of subsection III.G.3 of Appendix R for automatic suppression and detectionfor specific fire zones located in the Mechanical Equipment Room and Control Room roof at Turkey Point Units 3 and 4. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has reviewed your submittal and finds that aresponse to the enclosed Request for Additional Information is needed before we can complete the review.This request was discussed with Ms. Olga Hanek of your staff on December 8, 2005, and it wasagreed that a response would be provided by January 13, 2006. b.Is the air flow within the room turbulent such that smoke detection could becompromised by inadequate placement of the detector(s)? c.What version of National Fire Protection Association standard NFPA 72 isreferenced for the design and installation standard for the detector(s)?
