REACTOR SHUTDOWN At 9:10 a.m. on July 30, the Hope Creek reactor scrammed due to Low Reactor Vessel water level, after power was lost to the reactor feedwater control circuit. During the transfer of power supplies to an instrumentation inverter, the transfer circuit l apparently failad, deenergizing the Teedwater circuit. The high pressure. coolant l

injection and reactor core isolation cooling systeras both automatically started and injected into the vessel until secured by the operators. All plant safety systems responded as designed. As of 10:00 a.m., July 30, reactor. vessel level is steady at 35 l inches and the unit is in hot shutdown. The licensee declared an Unusual Event from 9:26 a.m. to 9:27 a.m. in accordance with the site Emergency Plan. The licensee plans to return t) power immediately after investigation and correction of the cause of the inverter pr>blem, and completing the required surveillance tests.

The resident inspectors are onsite, following the licensee's actions.
