Subject:

FUEL HANDLING INCIDENT During fuel handling in the spent fuel pool to inspect spent fuel that was suspected to contain failed fuel, the fuel handling machine became stuck in an upright position. At the time, fuel was in the machine, however, the fuel has remained submerged in the pool. Area radiation levels increased to approximately 10 REM / Hour.

4 The licensee has evacuated the fuel handling floor. An alert was declared at 1:34 p.m.

The resident inspector is onsite following licensee's actions.

The States of New Jersey and Delaware have been notified.
