Dated August 3, 1978

Subject:

Greene County Nuclear Power Plant Loss of Component Cooling Water to Reactor Coolant Pump Seals Docket No. 50-549

Dear Sir:

The NRC,by the referenced letter and in the Safety Evaluation Report (SER), Supplement 1, has requested design commitments which would be implemented in the event that reactor coolant pump tests do not show that pump seal in-tegrity is maintained for thirty minutes following loss of component cooling water to the seals.

The Authority will, if tests results are not positive, provide safety grade instrumentation to initiate automatic protective action to prevent seal degradation from resulting in a breech of the reactor coolant pressure boundary.
