Dear Ms. Wasserbach:

I am pleased to respond to your letter dated September 28, 1978 to Chairman '

Hendrie which was referred to me for reply.

You are correct that a meeting was held on February 11, 1976 involving members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Staff. The purpose of this meeting was to explain to the public the role of the NRC Staff in conducting its environ-mental and safety reviews and the nature and extent of the public's participation in NRC licensing proceedings. This meeting was not conducted exclusively with residents of Catskill, New York but open to the general public from all areas contiguous to the site of the proposed Greene County Power Plant. In fact it appears that several residents from the Village of Saugerties, including yourself,  !

attended this meeting as well as residents from other nearby communities (List of attendees attached to " Report on Meeting Held for the General Public of the Arecs Contiguous to and in the General Vicinity of the Proposed Greene County Nuclear Power Plant by PASNY", Appendix A, attached) . Additional informa-tion about the proposed power plant may be obtained by attending the continuing joint hearings regarding the licensing of the' proposed Greene County facility, which are being held in Albany before the NRC Atomic Safety and Licensing Board and the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Envi-ronment, and to which members of the public are encouraged to attend. Further-more, a public document room has been established at the Catskill Public Library, 1 Franklin Street, Ct.tskill, New York. in which all correspondence between the parties, documents filed in the case and transcripts of the hearings are maintained to enable members of the public, who are unable to attend tla hearings in person, j to be fully informed of all aspects of the proceeding. Therefore, there are no plans to conduct a public meeting in the Village of Saugerties.

It should also be of interest to you that the 'NRC Staff requested and received I from the Mayor of the Village of Saugerties, Honorable George A. Turner, Jr. ,

his specific comments and concerns regarding the proposed plant by letter l

e A.E. Wasserbach dated September 22,1978 (Appendix B) . These comments and concerns are presen+.ly being evaluated by the NRC Staff and will be considered in the Staff's final environmental analysis.

If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely ,

LW" Howard K. Shapar
