i BOSTON EDISON COMPANY PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWER STATION DOCKET NO. 50-293 Operational Summary for September, 1983 The month commenced with the unit at 99% power.due to fuel depletion. This power level was maintained until September 4,1983, when it was temporarily

reduced to 60% for a change in control rod pattern. After the rod pattern change, the unit was returned to 100% power which was maintained until September 9, 1983. On this date, the "A" Recirculation pump tripped while brushes were being changed on the MG set. (Ref.: LER 83-049/03L-0).

Power was then returned to 90% at which time the reactor scrammed due to a false low Reactor Water level indication. The false indication was re-ceived during surveillance testing. In addition, the main condenser was backwashed on September 9, 1983.

On the morning of September 10, 1983, plant startup commenced until the reac-tor scrammed due to the turbine bypass valves closing at 19% power. Startup recommenced and the generator was synchronized to the grid on September 11, 1983. The unit maintained 99.5% power from September 13, 1983, until September 19, 1983, when control rod exercises were performed. After the con-l trol rod exercises, the unit was returned to 100% power which was maintained until September 25, 1983.

On September 23, 1983, the HPCI System was declared inoperable when a HPCI turbine steam isolation valve failed to open during a surveillance test.

(Ref.: LER 83-052/03L-0). On September 25, 1983, power was reduced and control rod exercises performed. Steady state operation was maintained un-til September 30, 1983, when the HPCI System was declared inoperabic.

(Ref.: LER 83-048/01X-0).
