SUBJECT:

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENCE DURING POWER OPERATIONS In December 1990, the Regional Administrator toured TMI-1 and held

(

an informal meeting with key management at the site.

The subject of entering Technical Specification (TS) Limiting Conditions of I

Operations (LCO) to perform preventative maintenance was discussed.

A specific example discussed was the annual overhaul of the site's emergency diesel generator (EDG).

TMI-l's TS allows the removal from service of one EDG for a period of one week while at power operations.

The licensee, as a practice, has entered this LCO to remove one EDG at a time to perform the required annual overhaul of the diesel during power operations.

Mr. T.G.

Broughton, Director and Vice President of TMI, stated that GPUN had internally reviewed this topic and found that the site practice / approach on the regarded issue was acceptable.

Mr. Broughton offerred to provide the Regional Administrator with i

a copy of the internal documents addressing this subject.
