9g * *\\d July 11, 1989 OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONER MEMORANDUM FOR:
Kenneth M.
Carr Chairman ps FROM:
James R.
Curtiss Commissioner
SUBJECT:
COMMISSION MEETING -- EPRI DESIGN REQUIREMENTS DOCUMENT In view of a number of recent developments, I think it would be beneficial for the Commission to schedule a meeting on the subject of the EPRI Design Requirements Document.
The Commission was last briefed on the subject of the EPRI Design Requirements Document in June of 1988.
As the Commission indicated at that time, the EPRI initiative to develop a Design Requirements Document for future reactors is a significant undertaking, with the potential for having a positive impact on the design of the next generation of nuclear power plants.
For this reason, the EPRI initiative warrants continued and periodic Commission oversight.
Additionally, it is my understanding that the Commission has endeavored to meet with EPRI roughly on an annual basis.
Accordingly, I would recommend that a Commission meeting be scheduled for the staff and EPRI to report on the current status of the EPRI Design Requirements Document initiative, with an agenda along the following lines:
1.
Update on the status of the Design Requirements Document for the evolutionary ALWRs--
Brief summary of the process for e
review and approval of the document, including a discussion of the general approach being taken to the identification and resolution of safety issues; e
Status report on progress to date, including chapters submitted / reviewed, specific approach being taken on major safety issues, and optimization 9408030100 940629 PDR COMMS NRCC CDRRESPONDENCE PDR
