HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1, 2 RESPONSE TO DRAFT SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT ON APPEPOIX R EXEMPTION REQUEST Gentlemen:

Georgia Power Company has reviewed the draft Appendix R Exemption Request Safety Evaluation Report (SER) transmitted by your letter dated January 20, 1983. We hereby request a meeting with the management of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR) to make our appeal for reconsideration of the NRC's proposed denial of certain exemption requests as described in tie SER. We request that this meeting occur on or after March 29, 1983. The details regarding time, location, and agenda will be discussed with the NRC Licensing Project Manager for Plant Hatch.

We believe a meeting with the staff of NRR involved with the Appendix R submittal review process, prior to the requested meeting with NRR management, could be quite useful in the resolution of outstanding issues related to the exemption process. We are willing, therefore, to support such a meeting at your convenience. The benefits and possible schedule of a meeting with the staff will be discussed with the NRC Licensing Project Manager in the near future.

Please be advised that it is our intention to provide additional information in future correspondence for the purposes of amplification and clarification of our July 1, 1982 submittal. Included in that correspondence will be our comments on the accuracy of the SER in its reflection of the information contained in our July 1,1982 submittal.

If you should have questions concerning this request and suggestion, please contact this office.

Yours very truly,
