s E1 M1C DOCKET NO. 50-321 OPERATING LICENSE DPR-57 EDWIN. HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 REQUEST FOR EXTENSION OF SCHEDULE FOR EMERGENCY LIGHTING INSTALLATION Gentlemen:

Georgia Power Company in a March 19, 1981 letter to the NRC stated its intention to install emergency lighting units at Plant Hatch in accordance with 10CFR50, Appendix R, Paragraph III J by November 17, 1981.

We hereby request an extension of that schedule for Unit 1 to December 4,1981, as an i

exemption to 10CFR50.48 c.2.

The installation of emergency lighting units in Unit 2 and the diesel generator building will be accomplished prior to the required date.

However, a significant effort remains to complete installation on Unit 1.

The delay is the result of a required redesign of mounting brackets and the subsequent procurement of material to accommodate the revised designs.

It is our estimate that the completion of ~ installation can be accomplished by l

December 4, 1981.

Thus, an extension in schedule is required.

A significant amount of emergency lighting, which meets the eight hour battery capacity requirements of paragraph III J, is currently installed in Unit 1.

This emergency lighting provid?s adequate illumination for operation of safe-shutdown equipment, albeit not in full compliance with 10CcR50 Appendix R.

Additionally, hand-held emergency lighting is

(

abundantly available to plant personnel.

Considering these facts and the i

long range nature of the Appendix R requirements, we feel that no significant impact on plant operations and casualty control or the public well-being will result from the requested extension.
