As discussed with Plant Hatch Licensing Project Manager, Mr. Mort Fairtile on May 27,

1982, we are requesting veri fication of the understanding we have regarding the fire rating of the station battery room water-tight doors at Plant Hatch.

The subject doors, located on the lowest elevation of the plant control building, are designed to meet water sealing requirements.

Accordingly, the doors are water-tight, heavy steel

" submarine-type" doors.

It was our understanding during the fire plan evaluation, conducted by NRR in 1978-1979, that these doors were exempted from having to have a three-hour fire rating.

Unfortunately, the fire hazard's evaluation for Plant Hatch fails to state this.

To preclude concerns of auditing and inspection agencies, we wish to have this fact verified in writing.

Please contact this office if you need further information in verifying this exemption.

Very truly yours, Q

J. T. Beckham, Jr.
