""8' M NRC DOCKETS 50-321, 50-366 OPERATING LICENSES DAR-57, tFF-5 O.

3 EDWIN 1. HATCH NUCLE!VI PLANT UNITS 1, 2 xk REVISION TO FIRE EVALUATION REPORT 9

Gentlemen:

The " Evaluation of the Hatch Nuclear Plant Fire Protection Program" was I

submitted for NRC review on October 27, 1976.

It has been revised through eight amendments; the last of which was issued September 21, 1978.

Operating License tFF-5 issued on June 13, 1978 for Unit 2 incorporated the fire evaluation as an additional condition of the license.

Georgia Power Company herein submits Amendment 9 to the fire protection evaluation for KtC review pursuant to the provisions of paragraph 2B of Amendment 19 to Operating License tFF-5.

l The control rooms at both Plant Hatch units have been modified to enhance the operator's environment and thereby reduce operator stress and l

fatigue.

These modifications include the use of various materials which alter the fire loading calculations for the control room.

The attached i

revision to section III.C.2 of the fire evaluation repcrt discusses those changes in detail Our analysis has concluded that these changes do not result in a decrease in the effectivenss of the program and are permitted under paragraph 2B of Amendment 19 to the Unit 2 Operating License WF-5.

While the fire loading in the control rooms is increased a moderate amount, the loss of the control room to fire is one of the baces for the design of the fire protection system.

Thus, the capability of ihe fire protection program is not degraded.

Inrtructions for entering Amendment 9 into the " Evaluation of the Hatch Nuclear Plant Fire Protection Program" are attached.

If you have any questions or concerns concerning these changes, please contact my office.

Yours very truly, J. T. Beckham, Jr. f WEB /mb Attachment xc:
