  • Assuming pending application for capacity expansion is approved.

There are only three reactors in the extensive Commonwealth Edison system that .

may have a spent-fuel storage problem through the end of this decade if the pending applications noted are approved. One of these three plants, Dresden

] 1, is down for an indefinite outage. If operations resume, it will need to transfer fuel immediately after the first fuel discharge to maintain full-core-reserve. Since fuel may be transferred on site to Dresden 2 or Dresden l- 3, it may be decided not to retain that reserve and, if so, there is storage space for the discharge from some five additional operation cycles. -

7 The other two reactors that projections indicate have a spent-fuel storage l problem are the new BWR plants, LaSalle 1 and LaSalle 2. These plants will have their initial spent-fuel discharges during the next two years and are projected to lose full-core reserve in 1987. This projection is based on the

~] -

% *t i 20 L

e capability to transfer fuel between pools when required so that space for only

) one full-core reserve is needed for the facility. The storage racks being installed initially are of aluminum. It is estimated that. the pools can be

~} expanded to nearly double the sta. age capacity to 2,100 assemblies for each pool by converting to high-density poison racks. This increase in capacity would permit operation for over ten cycles before a critical storage position is reached. The Commonwealth Edison system is also sufficiently large to afford some flexibility in planning since transshipments between sites can be considered.
