On October 14, 1997, with Unit 2 in Mode 5, a contract worker who alarmed a foot monitor upon exiting the Unit 2 containment was discovered to have "hot particles" in his right shoe. Results of the immediate investigation revealed that when the worker reported for work at Cook he reported having experienced an uptake of mixed fission and activation products at a previous work site, which was confirmed by spectral whole body count. The investigation further revealed that the contamination had most likely been present on the insole of the worker's right shoe since the worker returned from an assignment at a European facility in August, 1997. The particles were collected from the worker's shoe and analyzed for activity, which showed primary isotopic activity of Zr-95 and Nb-95. An estimated dose of 83 rem shallow dose equivalent to the right foot was preliminarily assessed based upon time estimates and the results of the isotopic analysis. 'nder the requirements of 10CFR20.2202(b)(iii), for a shallow dose equivalent to the skin or extremities exceeding 50 rems. This interim LER is submitted in accordance with 10CFR20.2203(a)(1).

The investigation into this event is continuing. The particles have been sent to Teledyne for further analysis, which has not yet been completed. Additional information has been requested from the European facility, and the domestic nuclear site(s) that the worker was assigned to prior to his arrival at Cook. It is expected that the investigation will be completed, and an update to this interim LER issued by January 16, 1998.
