SUBJECT:

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND - APPROVAL FOR REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL TIME TO RESPOND TO NRC REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (TAC NO. ME1592)

Dear Dr. Al-Sheikhly:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) received an electronic mail (e-mail) from you, dated November 23, 2011 (Agencywide Document Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML113330030), requesting additional time to complete the responses to our request for additional information (RAI) provided by NRC letter dated September 8, 2011 (ML112380621). By letter dated October 12, 2011, ( ADAMS Accession No. ML11286A337),

you provided partial responses to our RAIs. You also requested that responses to the remaining RAIs be submitted by November 18, 2011.

In your e-mail, you requested an extension of time from the November 18, 2011, submittal date to January 15, 2012, for submittal of completed dose measurements, calculations, and methodologies for the maximum hypothetical accident (MHA) analysis during normal modes of operation with the ventilation off. During a site-visit on November 18, 2011, your staff also indicated emergency plan (EP) changes may result due to these newly acquired dose measurements and calculations.

Based on our review, we agree with your extension request because of the complexity of the RAIs requiring additional analyses and your sustained progress in completing the RAI responses. The new date for submission of RAI responses to NRC is January 15, 2012.

Please provide a status on your progress for meeting this due date by December 15, 2011.

In accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR), Section 50.30(b), you must execute your final response in a signed original document under oath or affirmation. Your response must be submitted in accordance with 10 CFR 50.4, Written Communications.

M. Al-Sheikhly Information included in your response that is considered security, sensitive, or proprietary, that you seek to have withheld from the public, must be marked in accordance with 10 CFR 2.390, Public inspections, exemptions, requests for withholding.

If you have any questions please contact A. Jason Lising at 301-415-3841 or by e-mail at Jason.Lising@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/
