IE Bulletins (IEB)

(Open)

IEB 79-13, Cracking in Feedwater System Piping, Unit 1.

Unit 1 was shut down to perform the inspections required by paragraph 1 of the Bulletin.

Paragraph l.a of the Bulletin requires radiography (RT) of feedwater nozzle-to-piping welds and adjacent base material.

For St. Lucie Unit 1, the feedwater line is welded to a shop-welded steam generator nozzle safe-end.

A 90 degree elbow is field welded to the safe-end and a

straight run of pipe.

The licensee radiographically inspected the safe-end to nozzle weld, safe-end to elbow weld, and elbow to pipe weld.

The inspec-tor performed the following examination of the inspection effor a

Review of RT Film Radiography was being performed in accordance with FPK gC Instruction gl 9.3, "Radiographic Inspection".

The film were evaluated to the 1977 Edition of ASME,Section III, Subsection NC, paragraph NC-5000.

In addition to the required number 25 penetrameter, a number 17 was also used.

In most all cases a

1T sensitivity was obtained.

The inspector reviewed the film for all joints as follows:

Generator A

Weld AO - Nozzle to Safe-end Weld Al " Safe-end to Elbow Weld A3 - Elbow to Pipe Generator B

Weld BO - Nozzle to Safe-end Weld Bl - Safe-end to Elbow Weld B2 - Elbow to Pipe The inspector reviewed personnel qualification records for two level 2 RT examiners.

Inspection of Feedwater Piping Systems Paragraph 1.c of the Bulletin requires that feedwater system piping supports and snubbers be visually examined to verify operability and conformance to design.

The inspector discussed this examination with responsible licensee personnel.

The inspection was complete and inspection results were being complied.
