Mr. James P. O'Reilly LER No.82-061 Page Two January 17, 1983 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EVENT l

l On December 18, 1982, at 0705 hours0.00816 days
0.196 hours
0.00117 weeks
2.682525e-4 months
with the Plant in Mode 2, Surveillance Test Procedure (STP) 125.002, " Diesel Generator Operabili.ty Test," was performed unsatisfactorily on Diesel Generator B (XEG001B).

The Diesel Generator B tripped on low lube oil pressure and was subsequently declared inoperable.

This is considered to be a valid start failure and is the first failure in the last one hundred valid tests for Diesel G3nerator B.

At 0730 hours0.00845 days
0.203 hours
0.00121 weeks
2.77765e-4 months
, the diesel was restarted to iniestigate the low lube oil pressure condition.

The lube oil pressure was acceptable.

The diesel generators are tested in accordance with Technical Specification 3.8.1.1 and Regulatory Guide 1.108.

PROBABLE CONSEQUENCES There were no adverse consequences as the applicable Technical Specification Action Statement was met during this event.

CAUSE(S) OF THE OCCURRENCE The cause of the event is unknown.

Upon restart, the lube oil pressure was within tolerance.

To date, Diesel Generator B has experienced no other problems with lube oil pressure.

IMMEDIATE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS TAFEN The immediate corrective action taken was to declare the diesel generator inoperable and perform the surveillance testa required by Action Statement (a) of Technical Specification 3.8.1.1.

More specifically, STP-125.002 was performed satisfactorily on Diesel Generator A (XEG001A) to ensure its operability, and STP-125.001 aas performed satisfactorily on the required electrical power system breaker alignments.

A Maintenance Work Request was issued to investigato the lube oil pressure switches with no resulting problems identified.

Diesel Generator B was returned to operable status at 1355 hours0.0157 days
0.376 hours
0.00224 weeks
5.155775e-4 months
on Decenber 18, 1982, upon the satisfactory completion of STP-125.002.

ACTION TAKEN TO PREVENT RECURRENCE As Diesel Generator B has experienced no other problems with lube oil pressure to date, the Licensee plans no further action for this event other than the normal surveillance testing.

This is the first failure in the last one hundred valid tests.

Per Technical Specification Surveillance Requirement 4.8.1.1.3 and Regulatory Position C.3.b of Regulatory Guide 1.108, the surveillance testing f requency will continue "at least once every 31 days" as required.
