Mr. James P. O'Reilly LER No.82-019 Page Two November 8, 1982 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EVENT On October 10, 1982, with the Plant in Mode 3, a Reactor Coolant System Pressurizer PORV Block Valve (MVG 8000 C) was experiencing packing leak in the open position.

The Reactor Coolant System was at the normal operating pressure of 2235 psig.

The valve was closed and its associated breaker was opened per Technical Specification 3.4.4.(b) Action Statement b.

1 PROBABLE CONSEQUENCES There was no adverse resulting consequences as two (2) Pressure PORV's and their associated block valves remained OPERABLE; also, the Pressurizer is equipped with three (3) code safety relief valves.

CAUSE(S) 0F THE OCCURRENCE The cause of this occurrence is attributed to valve packing wear.

IMMEDIATE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS TAKEN PORV block valve (MVG 8000 C) was closed within one (1) hour and its associated breaker was opened.

The packing was replaced, and the valve was returned to OPERABLE status on October 16, 1982.

ACTION TAKEN TO PREVENT RECURRENCE The PORV block valves have been added to the Station Preventive Maintenance Program to reduce recurrences of this nature.
