(IWP-3300, 4310)BASSFORRIEF:Thedataassociated withbearingtemperatures takenatone-yearintervals provideslittlestatistical basisfordetermining theincremental degradation ofabearingoranymeaningful trendinginformation orcorrelation.

Inmanycasesthepumpbearingsarewater-cooled andthus,bearingtemperature isafunctionofthetemperature ofthecoolingmedium,whichcanvaryconsiderably.

Vibration measurements areasignificantly morereliableindication ofpumpbearingdegradation thanaretemperature measurements.

Allpumpsintheprogramaresubjected tovibration measurements inaccordance withIWP-4500.

Althoughexcessive bearingtemperature isanindication ofanimminentorexistingbearingfailure,itishighlyunlikelythatsuchacondition wouldgounnoticed duringroutinesurveillance testingsinceitwouldmanifestitselfinotherobviousindications suchasaudiblenoise,unusualvibration, increased motorcurrent,etc.Anypotential gainfromtakingbearingmeasurements, whichinmostcaseswouldbedonelocallyusingportableinstrumentation, cannotoffsetthecostintermsofdilutionofoperator'effort,distraction ofoperators fromotherprimaryduties,excessive operating periodsforstandbypumpsespecially underminimumflowconditions, andunnecessary personnel radiation exposure.

Pumpflowrateshallbemeasuredduringthetest.(TableIWP-3100-1)SSORIF:Thereareonlytwopractical flowpaths available forperforming inservice testingof,.theAFWPumps.Theseincludetheprimaryflowpathintothemainfeedsupplylinesandthencetothesteamgenerator andtheminimum-flow recirculation (mini-recirc andbypasstestloop)whichreturnstothecondensate tank.Theformerisprovidedwithflowratemeasuring instrumentation howeverthemini-recirc lineisafixedresistance circuitwithnoflowinstrumentation.

Pumpingfromtheauxiliary feedwater systemintothesteamgenerators duringplanthotoperation isimpractical andundesirable forthefollowing reasons:Duringauxiliary feedwater injection viathemainfeedwater lineswhiletheplantisoperating atpower,alargetemperature differential (approximately 375deg-F)couldexist.'hat wouldresult,insignificant thermalshockandfatiguecyclingofthefeedwater pipingandsteamgenerator nozzles.Based,ontheexpecteddurationofthetestingandtheflowratef ofthepumps-(275 gpm),itisexpectedthatthecooldownofthesteamgenerator wouldinducecooldownandcontraction ofthereactorcoolantsystemresulting inundesirable reactivity variations andpowerfluctuations.

Pumpflowrateshallbemeasuredduringthetest.(TableIWP-3100-1)BSISIFTherearethreepractical flowpaths available forperforming inservice testingoftheBAMPumps.Theseincludetheprimaryflowpathintothechargingpumpsuctionheader,arecirculation lineleadingbacktotherefueling watertank,andtheminimum-flow recirculation (mini-recirc andbypasstestloop)whichreturnstotheBAMTanks.Noneoftheseistotallysatisfactory forthefollowing reasons:*Operating theBAMPumpsdischarging intothechargingpumpsuctionheaderrequirestheintroduction ofhighlyconcentrated boricacidsolutionfromtheboricacidmakeuptankstothesuctionofthechargingpumps.This,inturn,wouldresultintheadditionofexcessborontotheRCSwhich,wouldadversely affectplantpowerlevelandoperational parameters withthepotential foranundesirable planttransient andaplanttriporshutdown.

Duringcoldshutdown, theintroduction ofexcessquantities ofboricacidintotheRCSisundesirable fromtheaspectofmaintaining properplantchemistry andtheinherent'ifficulties thatmaybeencountered duringthesubsequent startupduetoover-boration oftheRCS.B-7

Thereare,however,situations wheremakeupisprovidedtotheVCTfromtheBAMTanks;butit"isunlikelythatthescheduling anddurationof,.thisevolution presentsapractical opportunity forperforming pumptesting.*Theminimum-flow recirculation flowpathisafixedresistance circuitcontaining aflowlimitingorificehowevernoflowratemeasuring instrumentation isinstalled.

ALTERNTESTING:Duringquarterly testingoftheBAMpumpswhilethepumpsareoperating throughthefixed-resistance mini-recirc line,pumpdifferential pressureandvibration willbemeasuredandevaluated perIWP-3200andIWP-6000.

Duringtestingperformed ateachreactor'efueling outage,pumpdifferential

pressure, flowrate, andvibration willberecordedperIWP-3200andIWP-6000.

Thisalternate testingagreeswiththerequirements ofNRCGenericLetter89-04,Position9and,assuch,isconsidered tobeapproveduponsubmittal.

Todrainthedaytankwouldrequireadditional dieselgenerator runtimesordrainingover200gallonsofdieselinto55gallondrums.Neitherdrainingmethodisacceptable.

Evenifthetankcouldbedrained,thelengthofthepumptestwouldbelimitedbythesmallvolumeofthedaytank.Themostpractical methodofdetermining pumpflowrateisbycalculating
