Thisletterservestoconfirminformation providedbytelephone toNRCInspector Mr.L.NarrowbyMr.A.R.SabolofPPGLonSeptember 24,1980.Duringthatconversation Mr.Narrowwasadvisedthatthesubjectcondition wasunderevaluation forreportabi3.ity undertheprovisions of10CFR50.55(e).

LoosecontactmoduleswerefoundonsomeGEtypeCR2940selectorswitchesatother-nuclearpowerfacilitiesr, therefore, asamplingplanwasinitiated todetermine ifasimilarproblemexistedattheSSES.Construction wasinstructed toinspectatleast80CR2940selectorswitchesandpushbuttons, bothClass1Eandnon-Class 1E,onatleast13different piecesofequipment.

Construction wasgivenalistingof78piecesofequipment withapproximately 750selectorswitchesandpushbuttons installed onthem.Atotalof17switchesandpushbuttons (14onUnit2and3oncommonequip-ment)wereidentified withloosecontactmodulemountingscrewsoutof231switchesinspected in16piecesofequipment (3forUnit1,4forUnit2and9forcommonequipment).

etc.Viaasubsequent telephone callandletter,GEwasrequested tosupplythefollowing information:

1.Thereasonfortheloosecontactmodules2.Anexplanation ofwhatBechtelQCobservedtobeinsufficiently longmountingscrewsusedtosecurethecontactmodulestotheswitchframes.Theseapparently shorterthanadequatescrewsdonotpermittheendofthescrewtoextendbeyondthesurfaceofthemountingframe.Ithasbeenconcluded thattheremaybesomeswitcheswithloosecontactmodulesinsafetyrelatedcircuitsandthatthesecontactmodulescouldcomelooseifnotrepaired.

BechtelConstruction willcheckadditional CR2940switchesandpushbuttons andananalysisofallthecircuitshavingClasslEswitcheswithloosecontactmoduleswillbecompleted.

Basedonthelocationofsuchswitchesinsafetyrelated'circuits, BechtelProjectEngineering hasconcluded thatthisispotentially reportable under10CFR50.55(e)

.Further,sincethedetailsofthisreportprovideinformation relevanttothereporting requirements of10CFR21,thiscorrespondence isconsidered toalsodischarge anyformalresponsibility PPGLmayhaveforreporting incompliance thereto.
