ThepurposeofthisletteristoprovidePP&L'sfinalrootcauseevaluation oftheRHRpumpmotoroilcoolerfailurewhichtookplaceonMay28,1990.Thereportconcludes thatfailureofthe2CRHRPumpMotorOilCoolerwasnottheresultofMicrobiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC)norwasthepittingrecentinorigin.ThecauseofthepittingwasUnderDepositCorrosion causedbymanganese, iron,siltandsedimentwithsomeinfluence bymicrobiologic activity.
Deterioration tookplaceoveraperiodofyears.Therateofcorrosion wasinfluenced bysuchfactorsasheat,stagnation andvelocitybuttheactual,unanticipated failurewasthedirectresultofthelackofcleaningandinspection whichwouldhaveprovidedthedataneededtopredictthelifeexpectancy ofthecooler.PP&LwillensurethattheRHRpumpmotoroilcoolersarereplacedpriortotheendofusefullife.Inaddition, PP&Lwillevaluatereplacement ofthecoppercoilswithmaterials whicharelessaffectedbythecorrosion productspresentinthecoolingwater.AGO6PDOCK05'OOO3~~
