SPECIALREPORTSTEAMGENERATORBLOWDOWNRADIATIONMONITOROUTOFSERVICEDUETOCOMPONENTFAILUREThisSpecialReportisbeingsubmittedpursuanttotherequirementsofSt.LucieUnit1TechnicalSpecification3.3.3.1,Table3.3-6,2.c.iiandSt.LucieUnit2TechnicalSpecification3.3.3.1,Table3.3-6,2.c.iii.OnMarch14,1988,at1630hours,theSteamGeneratorBlowdownBuildingNobleGasRadiationMonitorwasdeterminedtohavefailed.Thecauseofthefailurewasdeterminedtobeafailedcentralprocessingunitprocessorboard.ThemonitorwasmanufacturedbyNuclearMeasurementCorporation,ModelGA2-TMO.Thisparticularmonitorisnowobsolete,andcannolongerberepairedduetotheunavailabilityofspareparts.InaccordancewithTechnicalSpecifications,analternatemeansofradiationmonitoringwasinitiated.At1100hoursonMarch16th,aportableGeneralAtomicsParticulate,IodineandNobleGas(PIG)monitorwasinstalled.Aplantchange/modificationpackagewhichprovidesfortheinstallationofapermanentGeneralAtomicsPIGunit,ModelRM-80,hasbeenapprovedbythesit'eSafetyReviewGroupandisreadyforimplementation.TheportableGeneralAtomicsUnitwillbeinplaceuntiltheinstallationofthenewmonitoriscompleted,whichisscheduledforcompletionnolaterthanOctoberof'1988.
