Mr. Thomas Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer Southern California Edison Company San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station P.O. Box 128 San Clemente, CA 92674-0128

SUBJECT: SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION - NRC INSPECTION REPORTS 05000361/2017-005, 2017-006 AND 05000362/2017-005, 2017-006

Dear Mr. Palmisano:

This letter refers to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) inspection reports opened in error during the operational to decommissioning transition for San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. The inspection report numbers 2017-005 and 2017-006 were unintentionally opened against the operating phase of the plant's life cycle. Unfortunately, our inspection report tracking system does not allow the re-assignment of opened reports to different phases; i.e. changing a report from operating phase to a decommissioning phase report. In addition, an upgrade to the inspection report tracking system generated new technical issues with these reports. Therefore, NRC Inspection Reports 2017-005 and 2017-006 are closed. Subsequent decommissioning inspections will be assigned inspection report numbers starting after Inspection Report 2017-006.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390 of the NRC's "Agency Rules of Practice and Procedure,"

a copy of this letter will be made available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the NRC's document system (ADAMS), accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Bernadette Baca at 817-200-1235, or the undersigned at 817-200-1191.

Sincerely,/RA by RSBrowder Acting for/

Ray L. Kellar, P.E., Chief Fuel Cycle and Decommissioning Branch Division of Nuclear Materials Safety
