. by NRC License Nos. R-80 and R-89 and tolthe discussions of our findings. held j

- by ~Mr. Meyer and Mr.. Perry with Dr. 0. D. Clark and Mr. H. C. Aderhold of your

staff at the conclusion.of the inspection.

Areas examined during this inspection-are described in the NRC Region I

. Inspection Report which is erriosed with this letter. Within these areas', the

inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative

records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspectors. Overall,

the inspectors found your activities to be technically. sound.

.The inspectors.found that.the required annual examination of licensed operators

was not performed for o'ne operator. This has been a continuing' problem that

lhas'not been limited to this one operator. On September 24, 1987, Mr. Meyer

and Mr. Perry requested that you and Dean Cady review the available adminis-

trative systems outside Ward Laboratory and begin using one of them to ensure

- that the annual operator examinations, annual operations audit, and annual

emergency drill are. performed on schedule. Please notify us in writing within

30 days of.this letter's date of the method you have selected to ensure these

annual requirements are met.
