BOSTON EDISON COMPANY PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWER STATION Summarv of Operations for August, 1980 On August 1, 1980 the power 1.' vel was reduced to 86% due to high conductivity in the vessel caused by a resin breakthrough from 'D' demin. The unit was subsequently shut down at 1008 hrs. 'D' Relief Valve was tested at normal operating pressure and temperature and it failed to open. During the outage,

'D' Relief Valve was repaired, and the condenser was cleaned. 'D' Relief Valve was tested o.k. and the vessel conductivity within specs. The unit was back on the line at 19 30 hrs. on 8-3-80. Power was increased to 100% and maintained until Tuesday 8-12-80, when the power was reduced to 50% to backwash the condenser.

Power returned to 100% by 0800 on 8-12-80 and maintained until Monday 8-18-80 when the power was reduced to 50% to backwash the condenser. Power was in-creased to 96.2% at 0800 on 8-18-80 and continued to be increased to 100%

and maintained until Thursday 8-21-80. Reduced the power level to 50% on 8-22-80 and backwashad the condenser.

'4hile the backwash was being completed, isolated 'B' Reactor Feed Pump to replace both seals. Power was increased to 80% on 8-23-80, and maintained until 8-24-80 when the R.F.P. repairs were completed. Backwashed the condenser again, and increased power to 100% by 0800 8-25-80. Power was reduced to about 95% for the next three days due to condenser problems caused by severe tube leaks in the 4th point heater. Power increased to 100% at 1400 on 8-28-80 and maintair.ed until Sat. 8-20-80. The reactor was scrammed and the unit shut down at 0140 on 8-30-80 for the remainder of the month, to repair the 4th point heater.

I REFUELING INFORMATION The following refueling inJormation is included in the >bnthly Report as requested in a letter to Mr. G. C. Andognini dated January 18, 1978:

For your convenience, the information supplied has been enumerated so thac each number corresp'. nds to equivalent notation utilized in the request.

1. The name of this facility is Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, Docket No. 50-293.
2. Scheduled date for next Refueling Shutdown: September, 1981
3. Scheduled date for restart following refueling:

4

5. Due to their similarity, requests 4, 5, & 6 are responded to collectively:
6. The fuel, which had been loaded during the 1980 scheduled refueling outage, is of the new P8x8R design, consisting of approximately 64 P8DRB282 assemblies and 120 P8DRB265 assemblies.
7. (a) There are 580 fuel assemblies in the core.

(b) There are 764 fuel assemblies in the spent fuel pool.

8. (a) The station is presently licensed to store 2320 spent fuel asse=blies.

The actual spent fuel storage capacity is 1770 fuel assemblies at present.

(b) The planned spent fuel storage capacity is 2320 fuel assemblies.

9. With present spent fuel in storage, the spent fuel pool now has the capacity to accommodate an additional 1006 fuel asuemblies.
