SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO KOREA HYDRO AND NUCLEAR POWER CO., LTD LETTER, REVISED RESPONSE TO RAI 434-8352 FOR QUESTION 19-87, DATED SEPTEMBER 12, 2017

Dear Dr. Kim:

Thank you for your recent submittal letter providing the response to Request for Additional Information (RAI) 434-8352, Question 19-87, dated September 12, 2017 (MKD/NW-17-0278L, ML17255A952). In addition, the submittal letter provided the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff with a brief update on the status of the remaining Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) actions and milestones that Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.

(KHNP) is working on in support of the NRC review of the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) design certification application.

In your letter, KHNP committed to submitting the APR1400 PRA update by no later than September 29, 2017. You also stated that all final responses to all remaining open Chapter 19 (PRA) RAIs and a complete set of markups of Chapter 19 of the Design Certification Document would be submitted by September 29, 2017. The NRC staff appreciates the effort that KHNP is making to close out the changes and submit all of the information needed for the NRC staff to complete its review of Chapter 19 and related documents.

The NRC staff has been reviewing PRA information and RAI responses as they are received, however, much of the review depends on the changes documented in Chapter 19 and how they are supported by referenced documents. The NRC will update KHNP on its review within a few weeks, after the staff has had time to evaluate the technical details and quality of the submissions. We look forward to continued cooperation and project success as we begin our final series of presentations to the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards.

Dr. Kim If you have any questions or comments concerning this matter, I can be reached at (301) 415-7038 or via e-mail address at William.Ward@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/
