LaSalle County Nuclear Power Station

Meeting Summary

The findings and conclusions of the SALP Board are documented in Inspection

Reports No. 50-373/86006 and No. 50-374/86007. They were discussed with the

licensee on March 13, 1987, at the Brookfield Township Hall in Seneca,

Illinois. The licensee's regulatory performance was presented in each

functional area and it was noted that LaSalle had improved ratings from

Category 3 to Category 2 in four functional areas. A decline in rating was

noted in the area of Fire Protection / Housekeeping where the rating went from

a Category 1 to a Category 2. In addition, the Category 2 rating for security

showed a declining trend.

The NRC acknowledged the improvements in performance at LaSalle over the

assessement period and suggested continued attention be given by licensee

management to improve further.

While this meeting was primarily a iliscussion between the licensee and NRC,

it was open to members of the public as observers.

SALp 6 Board Report

NRC Docket Nos. 50-373 and 50-374

Reference: A. Bert Davis letter to Cordell Reed dated

March 9, 1987

Dear Mr. Davis:

On March 13, 1987, representatives of Commonwealth Edison Company met

with you and members of your staff to discuss the SALP 6 Board Report transmit-

ted by reference (a).

Commonwealth Edison appreciated the opportunity to discuss the report

with you. We acknowledge your conclusions in reference (a) that LaSalle

Station " performance was found acceptable and directed toward safe facility

operation", and has " improved regulatory performance during the agreement

period". We have developed and implemented programs to improve Station

performance and believe the improved operating performance in the latter half

of 1986 highly reflects these initiatives.

We recognize the need for continued management attention in

surveillance, security and housekeeping.

Overall, we believe this report is a good assessment of our

performance.

We are encouraged that the NRC has seen an overall improvement in

LaSalle Station's regulatory performance. The Station has challenged

themselves in their goals program to continue their pursuit of excellence.

Very t y yours,

/ "_= -
