The plant is the oldest in New England and has not had a thorough, independent safety assessment.

Last week, when the plant made the first 5-percent increase in power, vibrations were immediately felt, which stopped the immediate plans for an increase.
We write representing our small Massachusetts town that is directly downwind from the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor. We understand that those of us in Massachusetts have no direct say in the operation of the plant, which is ironic since we are closer to this potentially dangerous plant than many towns in the state of Vermont.
Initially, a plan for a 96-hour pause was made, but that was lengthened indefinitely while computer models are run to determine the effects of the vibrations.
