Just because the plant is shut down does not mean it is SAFE and that the community around it is SAFE!
I live about 10.3 miles down the Connecticut river from Vermont Yankee and have felt, and still feel, very vulnerable to unforeseen events - such as earthquakes, storms, and terrorism not to mention technical problems, infrastructure degradation and human error. If any of these things happen, we could be exposed to radioactivity that is sitting in the spent fuel pool way up in the air!
I have been pleading with my state representative to expand the evacuation zone to 20 or better yet 50 miles around a nuclear power plant... and that includes active and closed plants... every place that nuclear accidents are possible.
