UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT IRVINE - RESPONSE TO THE REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL TIME TO RESPOND TO THE REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE LICENSE RENEWAL (TAC NO. ME1579)

Dear Dr. Miller:

We are continuing our review of the application for Renewal of License No. R-116, Docket No. 50-326 for the University of California Irvine Nuclear Reactor Facility. The application was submitted on October 18, 1999, as supplemented by letters dated October 23, 1999, January 27, July 14, and October 20, 2010. By letter dated April 15, 2011, we requested additional information (RAI) with a requested response within 30 days. By letter dated April 28, 2011, you requested an extension to July 1, 2011, to complete the RAI responses.

In a telephone conference conducted on May 26, 2011, we discussed the basis for, and agreed with, your requested extension to the RAI responses. Additionally, we noted that you have demonstrated good faith toward the completion of the RAI responses, and maintained good communication with the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regarding the status of your RAI response efforts. Furthermore, you agreed to submit the responses to the RAIs requested by letter dated May 26, 2010 as soon as possible but before July 1, 2011.

In accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR), Section 50.30(b), you must execute your submittal and RAI responses in a signed original document under oath or affirmation. Your response must be submitted in accordance with 10 CFR 50.4, Written Communications. Information included in your response that is considered security, sensitive, or proprietary, that you seek to have withheld from the public, must be marked in accordance with 10 CFR 2.390, Public inspections, exemptions, requests for withholding. Following receipt of the requested information, we will continue our evaluation of your application.

G. Miller If you have any questions regarding this request, please contact A. Francis DiMeglio at 301-415-0894.

Sincerely,
