UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA - IRVINE RE: U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION STAFF REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA - IRVINE NUCLEAR REACTOR FACILITY EMERGENCY PLAN (EPID NO. L-2017-PMP-0015)

By letter dated February 26, 2019 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No ML19057A118), as supplemented by letter dated May 16, 2019 (ADAMS Accession No. ML19136A267), University of California - Irvine submitted the UC Irvine Nuclear Reactor Facility Emergency Plan, Revision 4.2, dated January 29, 2019 (ADAMS Accession No. ML19165A053) to the NRC and requested a review. The emergency plan was revised using the regulations in Section 50.54(q) Emergency plans, of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR). The changes associated with Revision 4.2 include modification of the periodicity for updating the emergency call lists and emergency inventory lists from annually, at interval not to exceed 14 months, to annually, at interval not to exceed 15 months, and updating the universitys organization structure and titles, and correcting minor typographical errors.

The NRC staff has completed its review of the UC Irvine Nuclear Reactor Facility Emergency Plan, Revision 4.2, dated January 29, 2019, and concluded that it remains compliant with the regulations and consistent with the guidance below:

  • 10 CFR Section 50.54(q)
  • American National Standards Institute/American Nuclear Society-15.16-2015, Emergency Planning for Research Reactors
