III.METHODOFANALYSISWeldstresscalculationswere'erformedforeachQ-Listedsupportasrequiredtoverifythatnoneoftheshopweldswereoverstressedinthe"as-fabricated"configuration.Thesecalculationswereperformedusingthesmallestsectionfound,carriedthefulllengthoftheweld.Thisrepresentsaconservativeapproach,sinceveryfewoftheshopweldsquestionedwereundersizeforthefulllength.ForcesontheweldsweredeterminedinaccordancewithITTGrinnell'sStressCriteriadatedJanuary17,1978,seeAppendixD,whichwasapprovedwithcommentsbyBechtelonMarch9,1978.Theload'perlinearinchwascalculatedandcomparedtothemaximumallowableloadperlinearinchasspecifiedintheabovelistedStressCriteria.

ITTGrinnellagreedtocompileandanalyzeeachshopweldfoundinthesurveyedassemblies withanon-conformance asdefinedbyITTGrinnellQualityControlProcedure OSQ-006Rev.0,whichwasapprovedbyBechtelonFebruary7,1978,basedonthesmallestsectionofweldfound.Thebasisofthisreportintendedtojustifytheacceptability ofthereferenced

supports, byshowingthatnoneoftheshopweldsonthesesupportswouldbeoverstressed inthe"as-fabricated" condition.

Sincespecifictolerances arenot,re-quiredbyANSIB31.1,orthedesignspecification, itisITTGrinnell's positionthatsupportsfabricated withshopweldsslightlybelowthesizespecified onthedesigndrawingshouldbeacceptable providednoshopweldsareoverstressed inthe"as-fabricated" condition.

TheresultsofthissurveyaregiveninSectionIVofthisreport.ITTGrinnellhasinspected threehundredeightyeight(388)Q-Listedsupports.

Ofthese,eightythree(83)werefoundtohaveweldsizesdifferent fromthedesigndrawings, asdefinedbyZTTGrinnellQ.'A.Procedure SQ-006.Alldis-crepancies weretabulated andforwarded toITTGrinnell's HangerEngineering Department foranalysis.

TheresultsofITTGrinnell's surveythroughAugust3.5,1978areincludedinsummaryinSectionIVofthisreport.Forthe.purposeofthisreport,ahangerrequiring reworkisdefinedasasupportthathasanyshopweldthatisover-stressedduetoundercutorshallowsizeinthe"as-fabri-cated"configuration.

III.METHODOFANALYSISWeldstresscalculations were'erformed foreachQ-Listedsupportasrequiredtoverifythatnoneoftheshopweldswereoverstressed inthe"as-fabricated" configuration.

Thesecalculations wereperformed usingthesmallestsectionfound,carriedthefulllengthoftheweld.Thisrepresents aconservative

approach, sinceveryfewoftheshopweldsquestioned wereundersize forthefulllength.Forcesontheweldsweredetermined inaccordance withITTGrinnell's StressCriteriadatedJanuary17,1978,seeAppendixD,whichwasapprovedwithcommentsbyBechtelonMarch9,1978.Theload'perlinearinchwascalculated andcomparedtothemaximumallowable loadperlinearinchasspecified intheabovelistedStressCriteria.
