DESCRIPTION OF A FISHKILL EVENT AT THE ST. LUCIE POWER PLANT The following are sequential responses for information required by the Plant's Environmental Protection Plans:
A. Crevelle jack in the St. Lucie Power Plant intake canal are dying. Mortality was first observed May 3, 1991. On May 13, 1991,  it was determined that the FPL criteria for a fishkill had been met. By May 21, 1991, approximately 100 dead fish had been found on intake canal berms and on barrier nets in the canal. By May 30, 1990, approximately 1,000 dead fish had been recovered. Crevelle jacks are the only species affected. Plant operations have been normal with no unusual or causative conditions noted.
B. Probable cause of mortality is insufficient food supply. Based on an examination of dead fish the following support a starvation hypothesis: empty stomachs, thinness of the fish and gonad size reduction. The jacks have eaten all the bait fish in the canal and will strike any bright object in the canal.
C. Corrective action has been to remove the dead fish and dispose of them on site. Observations on the fauna in the canal are on-going to help understand this event.
D. Corrective action is underway and involves rebuilding the velocity caps. When the repair is complete, entrapment of jacks may be reduced.
E. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, via Jan Norris, St. Lucie Plant Project Manager, was notified of the event on May 15, 1991. FPL's determination of reportability was made by FPL biological specialists in the Company's Environmental Affairs Department through a systematic evaluation of the event.}}

E. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, via Jan Norris, St. Lucie Plant Project Manager, was notified of the event on May 15, 1991. FPL's determination of reportability was made by FPL biological specialists in the Company's Environmental Affairs Department through a systematic evaluation of the event.
