Where winter temperature data is not available, the design minimum temperature of 60 F will be used. The rooms under consideration will not be allowed to pressurize, as the blowout panel will relieve at approximately 0.5 psid. Therefore, a leakage path out of the rooms will be used to maintain pressure as close to 14.7 psia as possible. The temperature effects due to slight room pressurization are assumed to be negligeble.

The effects of adjacent room heatup are not considered in this analysis (i.e.adjacent room temperatures are held constant).

This results in a conservative temperature profile for the room under consideration.

The actual adjacent room heatup due to the steam leak is expected to be minimal (when considering conductive heat losses). The COTTAP model assumes perfect mixing of the air and steam in the room under consideration.

Refer to APPENDIX B.for a special consideration related to the perfect mixing assumption.

The energy content of such leaks is considered negligable and probably cannot be detected by the current GE temperature-based leak detection system.Subcooled liquid at 120 F will not even flash to steam within the RWCU Rooms (at 14.7 psia).Subcooled liquid at 235 F only-flashes 34 to steam when allowed to expand adiabatically to 14.7 psia.

<~w If 1 Calc I M-SLD-005 Page 6 of 63 The only break conditions analyzed by this calculation are: a)subcooled liquid at 1025 psig/535 F, and b)subcooled liquid at 1190 psig/440 F Section 4.7 discusses the pipe break data used in the COTTAP model. For breaks of saturated or subcooled liquid (initially), a percentage of the break mass flow flashes to steam at 14.7 psia. The remaining break mass flow enters the room as saturated liquid at 2124F.For conservatism, this calculation neglects any heat load associated with the saturated liquid entering the room. This is considered reasonable, since open floor drains exist in each of the rooms under consideration.

This temperature profile, although conservative, only underpredicts actual expected temperature response by 3 to 5 F (engineering judgement).

Section 4.7 calculates the break mass flow based upon actual conditions in the pipe. Then, the amount of flashing is determined by allowing these conditions to expand adiabatically to the room pressure of 14.7 psia. This percentage is applied to the break mass flow to determine the amount of pure steam which enters the room for the conditions being analyzed.4.0 METHODOLOGY The Compartment Transient Temperature Analysis Program (COTTAP)was used to analyze the affects of a steam leak in various rooms within the plant.Since the RWCU rooms contain process lines of varying energy conditions, the analysis was performed for two different sets of break conditions.

The first case analyzed a break for normal conditions experienced at the inlet to the RWCU system (1025 psig/535 F).The second case considered the lowest possible energy condition which was believed to be detectable by the existing GE temperature-based steam leak detection system (1190 psig/440 F).All other process lines are of lower energy conditions and were assumed not to be detectable.

The program predicted temperature profiles for the room under consideration with the following set of conditions 1)5 gpm subcooled water leak (Summer)2)5 gpm subcooled water leak (Winter)3)25 gpm subcooled water leak (Summer)4)25 gpm subcooled water leak (Winter)The individual room models were developed from various sources of information, as identified in Section 2.0 References.

The RWCU rooms have been modeled as three inter-connected volumes which communicate with each other. The effects of each leak are considered on all three rooms. Therefore, the results will consist of 24 separate COTTAP outputs and the associated temperature profiles for the cond'.tions stated above. The following discussion is provided to outline the steps used in developing the individual room models.

~6-'4+a4~j A!

Calc N M-SLD-005 Page 7 of 63 Rooms Room Volumes Initial Pressure The room volume was taken from Reference 2.1 for the room under consideration.

Adjacent room volumes were set to a large value (i.e.1.0 EE15 cu.ft.)to maintain constant properties such as temperature, pressure and relative humidity. All rooms were assumed to be at an initial pressure of 14.7 psia.Initial Temperature All rooms were assumed to be at their maximum normal design temperature initially for summer conditions.

Actual winter data was used, where available, as a starting point for the winter runs. The winter data was taken as the"blue-box" average temperature for January 1988.The January data was considered to be more conservative than February data.Where actual winter data was not available, the design minimum room temperature of 60 F was used.Where winter data was not available for the room in question, the room was started at a temperature which allows it to reach a steady-state with its adjacent rooms. The outside ambient temperature was taken as 79 F (summer)and 26 F (winter). The summer ambient was taken from Reference 2.8 as the 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
daily average temperature, based upon the 14 ASHRAE design value for the Wilkes-Barre/

Scranton area. The winter value was taken as the actual monthly average for January over the years 1986 thru 1989.This average was based upon SSES Meteorological Data taken from the plant computer.A comparison of February data over this same time period indicated that the January data was more conservative.

Relative Humidity The relative humidity for all rooms connected by ventilation or leakage paths is based upon outside air temperatures of 92 F DB/78 F WB (summer)and-5 F DB/-5 F WB (winter).Air at these conditions was then allowed to heat up or cool down (sensible heating/cooling only)to the initial room temperature, and the corresponding RH value calculated or read from the psychrometric chart.

e.S4 1*, 1 4g h',+$+7~C~4 Room Height Calc g M-SLD-005 Page 8 of 63 This value is no longer used by COTTAP.It'original purpose was associated with the wall condensation calculation used within COTTAP.COTTAP has been revised and no longer uses this information.

Therefore, a value of 10.0 ft was inputted for each room. This value has no significance to the calculation.

Note that the actual room height was used in the calculation of room volume.4.2 Airflow and Leakage Path Data Airflow Data The design airflow is provided for the room under consideration.

All flow paths are identified (i.e.supply, exhaust and transfer air). The source of the airflow data is the PAID associated with the particular ventilation system for that room. The data identifies the room from which the air comes, and the room to which the air goes.A conservative value of 110<design airflow is inputted to the model, since airflows are balanced to+10%.Refer to the data input section for the actual values used in this model. The supply, exhaust and transfer air lines to the RWCU Rooms are equipped with back draft isolation dampers to prevent the spread of steam to adjacent rooms in the event of a high energy line break outside containment.

These dampers isolate at a differential pressure of 5" WG.The BDID's are not expected to close due to a steam leak of this magnitude.

Therefore, the model assumes the air flow path remains open throughout this event.Revision 1 of this calculation models separate exhaust registers for each of the rooms under consideration.

The original analysis utilized a common exhaust register located within the RWCU Penetration room. The exhaust from each room was modeled as transfer air supplied to the Penetration room, where it mixed perfectly prior to exiting the area.Refer to Appendix A for the specific airflow data changes.Leakage Path Data As with the airflow data, all rooms connected to the leakage path are identified.

The leakage path area is only used to scale the leakage flowrates for the entire compartment under consideration.

The intent of the leakage t f Calc 4 M-SLD-005 Page 9 of 63 path is to prevent compartment pressurization.

The open doorways between the RWCU rooms are modelled as leakage paths, since these are large areas.4.3 Heat Load Data Heat Load Type The type of heat load was identified using the following nomenclature Type Description Lighting Electrical Panels Motors Unit Coolers Piping Misc.Mechanical Equipment Heat Input Rate The heat rate input in Btu/hr for the associated heat load. The values for heat load types 1 thru 3 were obtained from References 2.2&2.3.The heat rate inputs for type 4 heat loads are inputted as negative values since the unit coolers remove heat from the room. The heat input rate for type 5 heat loads were input as-1.This value directs COTTAP to obtain piping information necessary to calculate the piping heat loads. The heat input rate for type 8 heat loads was obtained from References 2.2&2.3, as necessary for the appropriate room.To achieve an initial steady-state condition, a miscellaneous heat load (positive or negative)was added to the main room to balance all other time zero heat loads. This heat load was inputted as type 8.Note that COTTAP neglects cold pipe and equipment as heat sinks. This represents non-conservatism in this calculation.

A sample run made to determine the effects of these heat sinks indicated that resultant temperatures were only slightly lower than the values predicted when neglecting these heat sinks. Therefore, this calculation assumes the effects of these heat sinks are negligable.

a Calc N M-SLD-005 Page 10 of 63 4.4 Piping Input Data Only piping with a design temperature greater than that of the normal room design temperature was included, since COTTAP ignores cold pipe as a heat sink. This generally meant that piping at or close to Reactor conditions was included. Also note that this calculation neglects heat loss from small pipe (i.e.less than 2" OD).Pipe OD The outside diameter of the pipe was obtained from Reference 2.4 Pipe ID The pipe schedule was obtained from Reference 2.5.Knowing the schedule, the inside diameter was obtained from Reference 2.7 Insulation OD The insulation OD was obtained from Reference 2.11 Pipe Length Emmisivity The pipe length was obtained from Reference 2.4 The emmisivity was obtained from Reference 2.11 Insulation k Value The insulation thermal conductivity (k)was obtained from Reference 2.11 Pipe Fluid Temperature The design fluid temperature was obtained from Reference 2.6 Fluid Phase The state of the fluid was determined by reviewing the system P&ID's and design temperatures/pressures.

For this model, the fluid carried within the piping is subcooled water.4.5 General Data For Thick Slabs Room ID N on Side 1: The room number on one side of the slab.Room ID N on Side 2 The room number on the other side of the slab. When slab is adjacent to ground, a room 4 of"0" is used.Thickness The thickness of the slab was obtained from'Reference 2.4 i4 WL'-',n Calc N M-SLD-005 Page 11 of 63 Heat Transfer Area The area of the slab was obtained from Reference 2.4.The dimensions were scaled from plant ventilation drawings. The slab areas are calculated in the Data Input Section (Refer to Appendix A).Thermal Conductivity The thermal conductivity of the concrete slabs were obtained from Reference 2.8 , Chapter 23 Table 3A.A value of 1.0 Btu/hr sq-ftF was used for all concrete slabs.Density Specific Heat The density of all concrete slabs is assumed to be 140 ibm/cu ft.This value was obtained from Reference 2.8 , Chapter 23 Table 3A.The specific heat for-all concrete slabs was assumed to be 0.22 Btu/ibm F as obtained from Reference 2.8 , Chapter 23 Table 3A./The type of slab with respect to the room on Side 1 was defined using the following codes t 4.6 Film Coefficient Data For Thick Slabs Type w/r to Room on Side 1 Type 1 Type 2 Type 3 Vertical Wall Floor Ceiling hl 6 h2 All film coefficients (h)for inside walls were calculated by COTTAP.The film coefficient for walls in contact with outside air were inputted as Summer Winter 4.0 Btu/hr-sq ft-oF 6.0 Btu/hr-sq ft-F (Per Reference 2.8 , Chapter 23, Table 1)4.7 Pipe Break Data Fluid Pressure The fluid pressure within the pipe (psia).

Each output provides a summary of the data input, and the results of each time step within the 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
run time.At the end of each COTTAP output, a summary table of Temp vs Time information is also provided.APPENDIX B provides an Addendum to Calc g M-SLD-005, Rev.0 The addendum reanalyzes a steam leak in each room utilizing separate ventilation exhausts. The original analysis modelled the ventilation system with a common exhaust register in the RWCU Penetration room.Although the actual installed system utilizes a common exhaust, the model assumes all the transfer air from the Pump/Heat Exchamger rooms mixes perfectly with the Penetration room air.The location of the exhaust register suggests that this mixing would only occur in a very localized part of the room. The previous results tended to dilute the affects of a steam leak within the Penetration room. The Penetration room was also very sensitive to steam leaks in the Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms. The results of Revision 1 indicate that the temperature profile is significantly higher than the original analysis for the RWCU Penetration room. The RWCU Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms did not experience any significant changes as a result of modelling individual exhaust registers.

These results were expected, since the Penetration room response was diluted by the transfer air from the Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms.Refer to APPENDIX B for the results of the new analysis. The output is provided in a similar manner to that of the original analysis, as stated above.hlbke: cwing&c, tv'<cio'tb vdas dcferwllwe'~

The airflow data input has been changed to provide separate room exhausts in each of the three rooms under consideration.

For the original analysis, the rooms under consideration utilize a common exhaust duct located within the Penetration room.Since the model assumes perfect mixing occurs within each room, the transfer air from the Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms dilutes the temperature response for a leak in the Penetration room.Additionally, the Penetration room is especially sensitive to a leak in any other room under consideration.

For this purpose, an additional set of runs are provided which models separate exhausts from each room. This is intended to prevent any diluting affects from transfer air between the Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms and the Penetration room. The exhaust register is located in the southeast corner of the Penetration room (a relatively common area between all three rooms). The location suggests that the transfer air from the Pump/Heat Exchanger rooms would not mix appreciably with the air flow from the Penetration room. Some mixing can be expected near the exhaust register, but it is not reasonable to assume this transfer air could significantly dilute the Penetration room temperature response during a steam leak. This dilution affect caused by the transfer air helps to explain the need for such a.low Steam Leak Detection setpoint in the Penetration room. The following pages provide the results for the new analysis.Temperature vs.Time curves are provided along with the tabular results for each set of conditions analyzed originally.

The computer output supporting these results follow the curves.Refer to the Results/Conclusions Section for a discussion of the affects of the ventilation system changes.popes: Due<'ar~Re~<simn l vevicA Cycle>i4 u)o.S d<4rmi~~~op+~vn<sc.e,llo~eous w~hen+loads regild cM~c.SKndq-st, room~~+em Aa~no%atlniee.d pyioe fo<npodvcing
