The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region III staff (Lisle, Illinois) on this date.

UNIT 2 SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR PRIMARY SYSTEM LEAK Early on January 23, 1998, the unidentified leakage in Prairie Island l Unit 2 increased by about a factor of 10 to 0.2 gallons per minute. Later i that day, the licensee entered containment and identified the likely i source of the leak as the canopy seal of the G-9 partial length control I rod drive. The licensee subsequently began preparations to shut down Unit i 2 and repair the leak. '

On January 24, 1998, Unit 2 was taken offline and is expected to be shut down for about a week. In addition to inspecting and repairing the leak associated with control rod drive G-9, the licensee plans to modify the reactor coolant pump lube oil collection system to address a recently identified concern with the adequacy of the system, repair leaky nitrogen supply valves for the safety injection accumulators, and perform other maintenance activities.

The resident inspectors monitored the shutdown and will review the repair work and other activities.

The State of Minnesota will be notified. The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.
