Facility:

Northern States Power (Prairie Island 1 and 2)

Subject:

UNPLANNED RELEASE OF LIQUID RADIOACTIVE WASTE Northern States Power informed the Region III inspector who was at the site of an unplanned radioactive liquid release from the turbine building su=p to the discharge cooling canal.

The release was associated with a leak in the liquid radioactive waste  :

evaporator steam coil which was shut down for maintenance work. The path of the radioactive liquid was via the system piping through a g g '

normally closed valve to the turbine, building sump. The liquid was  ; .

. automatically pumped from the sump with turbine building drainage to I the cooling canal, l

The extent of the release is being quantified by the licensee. Initial I determination indicates allowable limits were not exceeded. Samples of canal water and river water upstream and downstream of the plant con-firned only background activity existed.

Based on preliminary information, we do not consider the release to be a health and safety problem. Followup by the Region is in progress.

Notification of the State of' Minnesota is planned.

p Region III received notification of this occurrence from the inspector at the site who was informed by the Plant Supervisor at 6:00 p.m.,

August 27, 1975.
