LIGHTENING STRIKE AFFECTS INSTRUMENTATION, COMPONENTS At 4:39 a.m. (CDT), July 13, 1985, while in the process of shutting down because of a control rod problem, a lightening strike in the vicinity of the plant caused a reactor trip and the loss of some instrumentation.

A detailed examination by the licensee subsequently determined that 47 components were affected by the lightening, including security and meteorological equipment and reactor protection instrumentation.

The licensee has reviewed the methodology used to ground lightening and is in the rpocess of modifying the system to preclude a reoccurrence of this event. This is expected to be completed by July 20. (The unit is currently in cold shutdown.)

The resident inspectors are following the licensee's course of action.

The State of Illinois will be notified.

Region III was first notified of this event about 7 a.m. (CDT), July 13, 1985. This information is current as of July 19, 1985.
