Byron Unit 1 Notification of an Unusual Event )

Byron, IL 61010 Alert Site Area Emergency Docket No. 50-454 General Emergency X Not Applicable

Subject:

DIESEL GENERATOR CONNECTING R0D REPLACEMENT  !

As a result of a piston connecting rod failure at Palo Verde 3 (reference PN0-V-86-93 and 4 93A), the licensee was advised by the manufacturer, Cooper-Bessemer, that a connecting rod j in the 1A diesel generator at Byron Unit 1 was potentially defective. (Themanufacturerhad j d:tarmined that the rod failure at Palo Verde 3 was attributable to fatigue cracking in an area that had been built up by iron plating and remachined. Similar buildup and remachining had occurred on the Byron 1A diesel generator).

Tha licensee declared the 1A diesel generator inoperable on January 7, 1987. A spare connecting rod was obtained from Braidwood. The licensee expects to complete the rod installation and testing of the diesel generator by early January 10, 1987. (The unit has remained in operation under a 72-hour Limiting Condition of Operation that would rquire unit shutdown at 3:50 p.m., January 10, 1987, if the diesel generator is not returned to service.)

The Vendor Branch, Office of Inspection and Enforcement, has been involved in coordinating the generic aspects of the connecting rod problem. The resident inspectors are reviewing tha rod replacement activities.

The State of Illinois will be informed.

This information is current as of 11 a.m., January 9, 1987.
