This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date.

Byron, Unit 2 Notification of an Unusual Event Byron, IL 61010 Alert Site Area Emergency Docket No.: 50-455 General Emergency XX_Not Applicable h Subj:ct: PIPE CRACK At4:18a.'m.(CST) December 18, 1986, with the plant in Mode 3 (hot standby), the licensee n;tictd a loss of water and drop in pressure in the 2D accumulator (the unit has four accumulator holding tanks which contain about 900 gallons of water each. In the event of a loss of coolant accident, the water would be injected into the primary system.)

Lic;nsee personnel entered / containment and discovered a crack in a 1 inch line used in filling the accumulator. ' Although the leak rate was less than 10 gallons per minute, Technical Specifications require the accumulators to be operable when the plant is in Mode 3 and licensee began a gradual cooldown.

The unit is c'urrently in Mode 4 (hot shutdown). The cause and extent of the crack is still unknown. It also is unknown how long the unit will remain in Mode 4 while the licensee makes the necessary repairs.

Region III (Chicago) is monitoring the licensee's course of action.
