The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

CONSTRUCTION WORKERS FATALITIES Two iron workers at the Byron Site were fatally injured at about 3:15 p.m on June 1,1978, when two out of 36 support struts, forming the base of a cooling tower under construction, collapsed, and the workers fell about 75 feet.

Both fatally injured workers were employees of EC0KEL, the cooling tower subcontractor.
Two other workers were treated for minor cuts

at the Byron Clinic and released.
i OSHA had inspected the cooling tower support structure the week of May 22,1978 as part of an overall plant inspection, which was based on a complaint about conditions elsewhere in the plant.
OSHA inspectors were back onsite on the evening of June 1,1978, investigating the accident.
A press release regarding the accident was issued by Commonwealth Edisco at about 5:00 p.m. on June 1, 1978.
Considerable Chicago area newspaper and television coverage followec.
