This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date. ,

SUBJECT:

TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENT INVOLVING FRESH FUEL S11PMENT A truck carrying seven fresh (new) fuel shipping containers overturned at 11:00 p.m. (EDT) on June 8 while exiting Interstate-40, just west of Knoxvillo, Tennessee. None of the containers were breached, and no radioactive contamination was found. All containers remained on the trailer, although the holddown chains on some containers were broken.

The Tennessee Bureau of Radiological Health, the local sheriff and local fire units responded.

Licensee representative are at the scene today to supervise transfer of the containers to another vehicle. They will be transported back to the Westinghouse manufacturing facility in Columbia, South Carolina, for examination of the assemblies for possible damage.

The fuel was consisted enroute to(3.6 of low-enriched thepercent Callaway) nuclear power plant near Fulton, Missouri, and uranium.

Local Media interest has occurred. Both the licensee and the NRC have responded to media inquiries.

The NRC received initial notifica' ion of this event from the licensee by telephone at 11:40 p.m. on June 8 (EDT).
