The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS Duke Power Company took Catawba Unit 1 -- which was at 100 percent power -- out of service about 2 a.m. (EDT) today to repair two leaks in a resistance temperature detector loop on a reactor coolant system cold leg. One leak is from an instrument line coupling, and the other is from a valve. Both are isolable. Total leak rate was about half a gallon per minute.

Duke estimates that a shutdown longer than 48 hours5.555556e-4 days <br />0.0133 hours <br />7.936508e-5 weeks <br />1.8264e-5 months <br /> will be required for cleanup of boric acid around the leaks and for repairs. The unit will remain in hot standby during this process. Catawba Unit 2 is operating at 100 percent power.

Both Duke and Region II are prepared to respcnd to media inquiries. The State of South Carolina has been informed.
