[External_Sender] Request for extension of the RAI 2 response date

Request for Additional Information (RAI) 2 was issued to ACU on December 21, 2023. The RAI transmittal letter requested a response or a request for additional time to respond by February 1, 2024.

Following the issuance of the RAI, the NRC issued eight audit questions that elaborate on RAI 2. The audit questions were issued on January 8, 11, 17, 22 and 23, 2024.

As identified in the RAI, there is a limited amount of data supporting the behavior of materials in the salt and radiation environment of a molten salt reactor. ACU and the Natura Resources Research Alliance (NRRA) have been planning to conduct materials testing to characterize some of the degradation mechanisms that may be present in the MSRR. ACU is engaged with the NRC staff in audit discussions of our assessment of the degradation mechanisms and our planned testing.

So that ACU and NRC staff can carefully consider the suitability of materials to possible degradation mechanisms and the need for testing, ACU requests that the RAI 2 response date be extended to April 30, 2024.
