[External_Sender] Request for extension of the MSRR RAI response date
- All, Requests for Additional Information (RAIs) 1 and 2 were issued to ACU on December 21, 2023. The RAI transmittal letter requests a response or a request for additional time to respond by February 1, 2024.
Following the issuance of the RAIs, the NRC issued eight audit questions that elaborate on the RAIs. The audit questions were issued on January 8, 11, 17, 22 and 23, 2024.
The ACU Molten Salt Research Reactor (MSRR) is the first molten fuel reactor to be licensed by the NRC.
As identified in the RAIs, there is a limited amount of data supporting the behavior of materials in the salt and radiation environment of a molten salt reactor. ACU and the Natura Resources Research Alliance (NRRA) have been planning to conduct materials testing to characterize some of the degradation mechanisms that may be present in the MSRR. ACU and NRRA are evaluating the planned testing to assure that it addresses the items raised in the RAIs and the follow-on audit questions.
So that ACU and NRRA can carefully evaluate the need for testing and revise plans accordingly, ACU requests that the RAI response date be extended to March 1, 2024. Regarding responses to the eight audit questions, ACU will contact staff to schedule audit discussions.
