1 1.
It in mv understandlun that the Doub le Des ign Pa rthquake (DDF.)
postulated in 1967 or thereabouts, was determined in produce a maximum ground accelerat ion at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant facilities of 0.40 g.
2.
The 0.4D ng finure u.ui hased on postulated earthquakes occurring on the San AndreSQ'othe r then-known f aults and at depth but not neces-sarily along known surf ace ruptures.
I 3.
The 90-milo llosnri fault zone, whose existence has recently been documented by the tt.S.G.S., was not. considered with respect to scismic design criteria, and calculation of the DDE.
1 I
4.
Seismic activity in the renton occupied by the fault is probably responsible for a mannitude 2.9 quake felt at the power plant site on j
Septeraber 24, 19 74.
In 19t', (December 1) a larner shahe was (cit at Avila Scach, having.i poss ible intensity of Vil on the 'lodified fiercalli
}
l Scale. The Berkeley firRCTRV printout of historic quakes describes falling j
plaster, toppled ref inary chimney 4, toppled shelven in stores, and dis-turbed water in San I,uis Hav.
Although di f ficult to translate this into
'j a ground acceleration value, it may well have exceeded 0.4 g.
i 5.
The llosgri fault vuoe is sub parallel to the San Andreas fault zone, and therefore a likely site for ongoinn rinnt-lateral shear between the North American and Pacific Plates. The small amount of scisnic l
activity actually recorded f ron the zone does not necessarily indicate that there is no potential dancer f rom future quakes. An illustration of l
this comes from the area of the L857 break along the San And reas fault, which af ter becoming the site of Calf.fornia's largest quake, has remained seismically quict.
6.
Therefore, i t now appears that the llosgri f au lt zone, two miles from the Diablo site at its point of ncitrost approach is, potentially, a generator those existence should be t aken rather seriously with respect to the calculation of the DDC, and possibly t o tsunami generation.
