SUBJECT:

KANSAS CITY TIMES INQUIRY REGARDING WOLF CREEK Martin Rosenberg, a reporter for the Kansas City Times, called me on July 9, 1985, about a possible pipe leak "in the reactor" and 6 rem exposure to a worker at the Wolf Creek plant. He said an anonymous caller had called the newspaper and the information was given to him to follow up on. I relayed the information to Lawrence Martin immediately.

After looking into the matter, Larry Martin said the only incident on record that might trigger such a call involved a repair job at the site with a radiation work permit (RWP) on July 1, 1985. The maximum exposure that could have occurred was calculated to be approximately 10 mrem. However, according to the exposure record, no one received an exposure. This information was relayed by me to Mr. Rosenberg on July 9.

On Tuesday, July 16, 1985, Mr. Rosenberg called again as a result of a second call from their anonymous contact. The caller was adamant that a pipe break had occurred resulting in a 6 rem exposure to a worker. However, this time he said the event occurred on July 7, 1985, in the containment building. Again the anonymous informant did not provide further information. Larry Martin asked Blaine Murray for assistance in following up on the alleged event at the site. Dean Chaney conducted a low-key thorough examination of the exposure records and RWP's and could not identify a pipe break or radiation exposure to a worker beyond that identified on the July 1 incident.

I advised Mr. Rosenberg of Mr. Chaney's findings and asked him to urge their informant to contact you directly. He thought he could get a message to the caller. I assured Mr. Rosenberg that the callers anonymity would be maintained and to call collect. Your office telephone number was furnished to Mr. Rosenberg. Mr. Rosenberg asked to be called if anything developed further.
