Subject:

Ihitial contact with alleger J

At approximately 2:00 p.m.

today I recieved a phone call from John Staggs, a i

rGporter for the Ari:ena Republic newspaper.

Mr. Staggs stated that he had bssn contacted by and met with a group of sin current and former contractor electricians from the Palo Verde site.

According to Mr. Staggs, the electricians claim that they have been pressured by their supervisors to j

perform inadequate work in order to meet schedule pressures.

The workers claim that the improper work is immediately tagged with a deficiency tag, and that j

the overall quality of electrical work at the site is high.

Staggs says the workers are concerned that schedule is more important than quality.

Ona of the six workers was fired recently, apparently because he was found sitiing or lying down during work hours.

The workers told Staggs this was j

buccuse he had not felt well and was resting briefly, as ordered by his doctor.

i Mr. Staggs then asked some general questions about allegation processing, and stated that he had also called the Senior Resident at Palo Verde, Roy Zimmerman.Staggs stated that he did not want to be listed as an alleger, and I requested the names of the electricians so that NRC could contact them directly.

Staggs stated that only two of the six electricians had agreed to be quoted in the article he is writing, and that he did not want to gi ve NRC their names until the article appeared.

I explained that he would then have to be

]

listed as the alleger, to which he agreed.

He did not requent confidentiality.
